Menuet in G Major (BWV Anh. 114) | Analysis
The Menuet in G Major (BWV Anh. 114) is a piece of music composed by Christian Petzold, a German composer of the Baroque period.
The composition of this piece has historically been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, due to the fact that it was included in the Anna Magdalena Notebook (Bach's second wife). This is the reason why we can see BWV Anh. 114 in its title.
This book is a compilation of musical works from many composers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Only a few have been identified, among them: François Couperin, Georg Böhm, and J.S. Bach himself, which is why many pieces have remained anonymous for decades.
Such was the case of this menuet, along with its companion piece, the Menuet in G minor (BWV Anh. 115), until 1970, the date on which it was finally and definitively attributed to Petzold.
To clarify the technical nomenclature: BWV is the acronym that represents "Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis" (Bach's works catalogue), while Anh. (Anhang) refers directly to the appendix selections inside the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach.

As its title indicates, this piece is in G Major tonality and, like the vast majority of minuets, is set in a 3/4 time signature.

Formal Analysis
First, I'm going to start by analyzing its macroformal structure.
This minuet presents a symmetric binary structure of 32 measures, which is perfectly divided into two major sections of 16 measures each.
For those of you who are not familiar with these academic terms: its structure is defined as binary because it can be clearly divided into two parts, established explicitly by the composer through the use of repetition marks.
It is symmetrical given the evident architectural correspondence between these two sections regarding both physical size and development. At a lower level, each major section can be further subdivided into four balanced parts of 8 measures. Each one of these subsections is formed by a pair of phrases.
As we observe the evolution of the piece, response 1 does not share the same structural character as response 2. The exact same design pattern occurs between response 3 and response 4. This directional shift is directly dictated by the underlying harmony.
Harmonic Analysis
As we can apreciate, the first part ends with a half cadence at measure 8.
The subsequent development is practically identical in structure to the first one, introducing only a couple of slight modifications in the final two measures (mm. 15 & 16) in order to resolve cleanly with a perfect authentic cadence in the final bar of this first overarching section.

The initial phrase of the second section shifts directly into the region of the dominant (V). Considering this modulation: the first phrase (m. 20) concludes on a half cadence.
The cadence that terminates this first part transforms into a perfect authentic cadence because we are temporarily treating V (D Major) as our temporary tonic (I).
However, the writing immediately guides us back to the original tonality of G Major during the second part. At measure 25, the chord of G (I) acts effectively as the subdominant (IV) of the previous key area (D Major). Finally, the definitive cadence that seals the second part of this section—and with it, the entire composition—is a solid perfect authentic cadence resolving in G Major.
Motivic Analysis
The primary motive that drives this entire piece is characterized by a specific rhythmic and directional profile.
It can be subdivided into two distinct segments formed by two different rhythms.
The first segment consists of a quarter note that establishes an interval of a fifth in relation to the following note, succeeded by four eighth notes moving in a conjunct, ascending motion. The second segment is built upon three quarter notes, the first of which is positioned at a distance of a fifth.
In measures 3–4, the motive is transposed to a higher pitch level in C Major (IV), constituting the first structural answer. At measure 5, we encounter an elegant inversion of the primary motive.
This technical device is known as motivic inversion, one of the most prominent motivic transformation techniques of the era. This methodology is highly characteristic—though not entirely exclusive—of Baroque counterpoint, which explains its frequent appearance across works of the period.
As visualized in the score: the interval generated between the first and second notes is inverted into a descending motion. Simultaneously, the direction of the four consecutive eighth notes changes, reversing its course to become ascending.
At measure 7, we find another variation executed upon the main motive. This specific structural variation will be adopted by the composer to serve as the principal motivic force for the entire second section of the minuet.
As previously outlined, the primary motive of the second part inherits the blueprint seen at measure 7, with the singular modification being that its opening interval now moves in a descending vector (B5 - G5).
Finally, at measure 20, we discover an entirely new motive that provides a sharp contrast. This freshness is due to the fact that it breaks away from the main theme entirely, rather than being built upon the variations we cataloged earlier. We will encounter this contrasting element once more at the dawn of the final part of this second section.
